Dog ultrasound cost breakdown

Ultrasound pricing depends far more on who holds the probe than on the machine. A general practitioner doing a screening scan charges a fraction of what a board-certified radiologist or cardiologist charges, and the interpretation can be bought separately from the scan itself.

What changes the price

Who performs the scan−30% to −50% at GPA general practitioner's scan costs substantially less than a board-certified radiologist's or cardiologist's.
Sedation+$50–$200Adds about 25–50% to a GP abdominal scan; needed mainly for anxious, painful or giant-breed dogs.
Setting+$100–$300Emergency and after-hours scans cost more than a scheduled daytime appointment, and the exam fee alone can exceed $100 at a specialty hospital.
Bundled workup+$300–$800A full cardiac workup (echo, chest X-rays and biomarkers) totals $700–$1,200 versus about $400 for the echo alone.

How to pay less

Ask whether your regular vet can scan and send the images for a remote radiologist read ($25–$75) instead of a full specialty referral — that typically saves $200–$400.

Schedule during regular hours. The same abdominal scan often runs $250–$350 in the daytime versus $400–$600 through the emergency service.

Ask about the mobile-sonographer day. Many general practices host a traveling specialist who scans in-house for $350–$600, which beats transferring to a referral hospital. Also ask whether sedation can be skipped for a calm, well-positioned patient.

How we calculated these numbers

Methodology. We compiled scan, sedation and interpretation prices from four published 2026 sources — VetReceipt's 46-invoice dataset, CareCredit's national cost survey, VetCostGuide's echocardiogram guide and Dogster's price guide. "Average" is the midpoint of the medians those sources report; "Low" and "High" bound the full range. State figures apply a regional veterinary cost index and are estimates. Frequently asked questions

Does a dog need to be sedated for an ultrasound?

Usually no. Most abdominal scans are done awake with the dog lying on its back. Sedation costs $50–$200 and is added only for painful, anxious or uncooperative patients.

Why does an echocardiogram cost more than an abdominal ultrasound?

It requires cardiology-level skill and Doppler measurements, so a cardiologist echo runs $350–$700 versus $200–$500 for a general-practice abdominal scan.

How early can an ultrasound confirm pregnancy in a dog?

Around 25–30 days after breeding. The scan costs $100–$300 and confirms viability, but it's poor at counting puppies — an X-ray after day 45 is more accurate for that.

Is a needle aspirate included in the ultrasound price?

No. An ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirate adds about $100–$300 plus $75–$200 for the cytology, and a guided core biopsy runs $200–$500.

A note on these figures. Prices are national estimates compiled from the published sources listed below and will differ from what your local provider quotes.
